From Author Keith McGowan: I live in Vienna (the capital of Austria) with my wife, who is Austrian. Can you find Austria on a map? Hint: Look south of the Czech Republic. Vienna is about three hours southeast of Prague and three hours northwest of Budapest. Here are a few photos from across the city.

Near where my wife and I live, this statue commemorates carriage drivers, called “Fiaker” in the Austrian dialect.

A building on the ring road in downtown Vienna. There are a lot of ornate buildings across the city. The two-headed bird at top is the symbol of the old kingdom of Austria-Hungary—one head for Austria and one head for Hungary.

The Witch of Danube Canal in downtown Vienna. Look at the person and trailer on the right to see the size of this painting. Vienna has a lot of talented graffiti artists.

Can you guess what the sign says?

This little house in the city is part of a “Schrebergarten,” plots of land that used to be vegetable garden plots for people living in the city. They’ve since been turned into bungalows. This one is right in the city, not far from a subway line.

Merry Christmas! In December, demon parades for kids(!) open the Christmas season. The demons are called Krampus and the tradition dates back many centuries. They are always led by Saint Nicholas.

A rarely seen view of the city. This is the “new” part of the city as seen across the Danube River in summer.

That’s all for now. Thanks very much for your visit!
